Hidden Secret So You Pitch Well – or Give a Great Speech

DarkestSecretsPersuasionfrontcover
Guard Your Personal Energy. Make this a Great Year 2018 – Get Tom Marcoux’s book, Darkest Secrets of Persuasion and Seduction Masters.

“What makes the difference between a pitch that lands and one that bounces off the audience?” my friend Stephen asked.

“Energy,” I replied.

“Are you talking about coming across as enthusiastic?” he asked.

Personal energy is not just about putting on the big smile and speaking with vigor and passion. Some people try faking a smile, and it comes across as phony.

I dislike that old cliché “fake it until you make it.”

A lot of people feel, subconsciously, that something is off when someone puts on a “fake enthusiasm” mask for their pitch or speech.

Instead, I focus on Act It Until You Become It. That arises from my training as both actor and feature film director. To act it requires a good form of energy. You feel confident of your material, your efforts in rehearsals and the coaching you’ve received.

Still, there is an additional level to having effective personal energy: You need to guard your energy.

From what? From manipulation striking you in your regular life.

In my 40’s, I was in a particular auditorium watching as my friends were being manipulated by certain tactics, a speaker was using. I got angry. Soon after, in a university professors’ lounge, I sat down with my laptop and wrote 2,000 words—in a sprint. (My rapid writing flowed out just before I gave a scheduled graduate level class in San Francisco.)

Those 2,000 words were the first of what became a book, Darkest Secrets of Persuasion and Seduction Master: How to Protect Yourself and Turn the Power to Good. [Click Here to ‘Look Inside’ this book.]

I’ll put this in a few words:

If you don’t protect yourself from manipulation in your regular life, you won’t have the reserves to be at your best when you’re on stage pitching.

Why? Because on some level, you’ll be drained and distracted.

Your pitch or speech is too important for you to leave to chance or the storms of life—including manipulation that arises from various sides.

Here I’ll provide some useful tips as the W.I.N. process:

1. Work on your weak points

Where are you weak? Do you get easy to manipulated if someone says, ‘Don’t miss out! The price goes up at 12 midnight’? Be sure to have people you trust who you can turn to—to protect you from making a bad decision.

2. Identify your countermeasures

Have a plan. Rehearse how you will counter extreme demands on your time or attention. Work with a coach or therapist—or both. (They provide different forms of support. I have clients who also have a therapist. I’m the Spoken Word Strategist and Executive Coach. Therapy is not my domain.)

3. Nurture your strength

Do you exercise every day? Imagine if you did. You’d feel stronger. We need strength in both body and mind. Study methods that will have you prepared.

A friend recently asked me, “Tom, why did you read 82 books last year?”

“My clients and my team rely on me to have a nimble mind filled with valuable, strategic methods,” I replied. “I keep up with research about how people actually operate. That’s how I can be a valued thinking partner and Executive Coach to my clients.”

In summary, get clear that you need to guard your personal energy against assailants trying to use manipulation in your regular life. Why? You need reserves of personal energy to act at your best in rehearsals and on stage for your pitch or speech.

Remember:

W – work on your weak points
I – identify your countermeasures
N – nurture your strength

Warmly,
Tom

Use the Advantage of Intuition for a Speech or Pitch

coverdsecrets_pitch_marcoux
Tom Marcoux’s book, “Darkest Secrets of Making a Pitch for Film and Television

“How am I going to know if my pitch is working?” my workshop member, Adam, asked.

“It’s a combination of coaching, test audiences, and your intuition,” I replied.

“Intuition?”

Several successful leaders point out that they use “gut feelings.” Author and researcher Gerd Gigerenzer identifies intuition as connected with data that has not risen to the conscious level. He notes situations in which a person had a “bad feeling” but could not give a persuasive, rational argument. Then the company went ahead into what became a business disaster, and the person’s “bad feeling” proved an accurate assessment.

In my speech about the “RoiLeader,” I talk about how to use intuition effectively. ROI refers to “Return on Investment.” Your best investments are in your own skills and in the person you’re in conversation with.

In my “RoiLeader” speech, I breakdown R.O.I. in this way:

R – relate
O – optimize
I – intuit

Here, I’ll focus on intuit.

We explore how to M.O.V.E. on your intuition:

To gain the advantage of using your intuition for your best performance in a speech or pitch, you need move—that is, take action.

  1. Make space for your intuition

What do you use as the opening of your pitch? You can make space for your intuition by saying, “I’ll just see how it feels over the next couple of days.” This is an “open” approach as opposed to shutting down your process quickly.

Unfortunately, many individuals have not practiced being okay for a duration of uncertainty. Top innovators know that you need to tinker with a problem for a time—to come up with an excellent solution

Be sure to try your opening line of your pitch with a number of people. Notice how you feel as you say the line. Give it time (and space) for you to discover what works well.

  1. Observe closely and “listen” to your intuition

At one point, I was preparing a speech, and I invited 11 people to hear various versions of the speech. They all had varying opinions.

Over the years, I’ve realized that one does not have to take in or use every different opinion.

It’s not just what other people say, it is what YOU feel as you do the speech or pitch.

As you practice saying your ideas out loud, you get experiences, so you can sense what feels like a true fit for you.

  1. Validate your intuition

Keep a log of times your intuition was correct, and you improved your life by acting based on your intuitive impression. When you have a written log, you have evidence that your intuition serves you well.

  1. Energize through rehearsal

Top actor Kenneth Branagh said, “I used to call it fear [stage fright] but now I call it excitement because it is more useful.”

As the Spoken Word Strategist and Executive Coach, I guide clients to devote even just 9 minutes a day to rehearsal (preferably early in the day) so they can get their subconscious mind involved in their process. When you work for 9 minutes in the morning, your subconscious mind works on your speech at various times during your whole day.

In summary, make space for your intuition to help you.

When your intuition is well-developed, you can even modify details spontaneously–during your pitchto connect well with your current audience of investors.

Remember:

M – Make space for your intuition
O – Observe closely and “listen” to your intuition
V – Validate your intuition
E – Energize through rehearsal

Tom

Use Effective Body Language in Your Pitch or Speech — Get Funding

soarwithconfidenceversion4final10-19-16web
Get Tom Marcoux ‘s book “Soar With Confidence … PItch, Lead, Succeed”

“You’re saying that the wrong body language can destroy my chance to pitch and get funding?” my client, Matthew asked.

“The wrong body language can affect the investors on the subconscious level. They won’t believe you have the confidence to be successful. That means that they’ll fund someone else’s project,” I said.

Learn Two Critical Elements of Body Language

  1. Do NOT Dismiss an Investor who seems to have “Closed Body Language”

If you step into a bookstore, you can find books on body language that proclaim that if a person has her arms crossed, she might be “closed off” to your idea.

Maybe.

She could also be cold. Or she simply finds that crossing her arms feels comfortable to her.

Here’s the point: The folded arms provide you with only one data point.

Some researchers refer to a form of “resting face” that unintentionally appears as if a person is irritated, contemptuous, angry, or simply annoyed. This expression is known as RBF — “Resting B__ch Face.”

I’ve seen some audience members (with folded arms and frowns) come up after a speech then break into a smile and tell me: “Tom, I really like the ideas you shared with us! The material is so useful.”

So be careful. Do not stop talking to people who look “closed off.” Address the whole audience because you want every chance to connect with potential investors.

  1. Make Your Body Language Congruent with What You Say

If you say, “I’m confident that my product can solve your situation,” while you’re wringing your hands, what will the investors believe—your words or your hands?

Your hands will be “too loud” and their actions will “drown out” your words.

Here’s another vital point: Do NOT take a step backwards when hit with a tough question.

Taking a step backwards makes you look scared and lacking in confidence. When I share this in workshops, a number of audience members nod their heads. That’s fine.

Then I raise the conversation up to a better place. I say: “Explanation does NOT equal transformation. … we’re now going to practice walking toward the person who asks a question.”

[In my workshops, people address a small audience of two—because the audience is divided into “Teams of Three.”]

The truth is you need to practice and rehearse effective body language.

Additionally, in my work as the Spoken Word Strategist and Executive Coach, I have my private clients practice taking one or two steps forward toward the person who asked the question. Just one or two steps forward—and not too close. The Effective Body Language says, “I’m devoting my full attention to you. I am not intimidated by your question. I am confident.”

In summary, pay close attention to the vital elements of body language.

With good, strong body language, you can be winning during a pitch even before you open your mouth. Additionally, make sure to keep the investors’ perception of you as confident by taking a couple of steps toward a person who asks you a question.

Remember, body language can drown out your words. Keep your words and body language congruent.

Tom

How to Make a Great Connection During Your Pitch or Speech

Relax_sellVersion4FINAL
Tom Marcoux’s new book Relax, You Don’t Have to Sell: How You Can Make Sales Without Being Pushy

“Tell me something profound,” my wife asked me.

She had just returned from driving home in a car–for 3 hours!–with an acquaintance who spoke only of shallow things.

“I love you,” I said.

She rolled her eyes.

Not the response I was looking for.

I later asked her, “What was that about?”

She said, “I think I was expecting you to quote something from Shakespeare. I don’t know.”

You might be asking, “What does this have to do with giving a pitch or a speech?”

A lot.

In the moment when I said, “I love you,” I said the most profound thing I know. Let me give you the context. Around 17 years ago, I risked my life for my wife. As I mentioned, I love her on a profound level.

Now, let’s look at giving a pitch or speech.

Here’s another profound question that rises up: “What would I do if I were not afraid?”

My thoughtful response is: “I would connect.”

Connection is the essence of successfully giving a pitch or speech.

I’m drawing an analogy here: when I risked my life for my wife, I was vulnerable.

To make a real connection in giving a pitch, sometimes, we can use an appropriate touch of vulnerability. Some authors write about “the power of vulnerability.”

What Makes Appropriate Vulnerability?

Be careful to avoid going overboard in using self-deprecating humor.

Also, avoid placing a self-deprecating joke in the beginning of your pitch. Why? Any bit of humor could lose half the audience. So, avoid humor at the head of your pitch.

Still, a bit of appropriate vulnerability can create a real connection. For example, in one of my workshops, I include the dream I had as an 8-year-old boy: to walk on the ocean floor. I got this idea from watching the feature film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Thirty years later, I discovered I had a real dream-killing problem: Inside an MRI exam machine, for the first time, I felt slammed by claustrophobia!

My fear rose up that the diving helmet would trigger my claustrophobia.

I then used strategy to deal with my claustrophobia. I rehearsed walking on the ocean floor by wearing a hoodie (sweatshirt), pretending that the hood was the diving helmet. I practiced looking forward and ignoring the hood (like I would ignore the helmet).

This worked! Yes! I had a great time walking on the ocean floor at the Grand Cayman Island.

At this point in my workshop, I connect my dream and my using strategy to fulfill that dream with the workshop attendees’ entrepreneurial dreams.

Trying to Look “Perfect” Can Be the Enemy of Connection

Years ago, as a novice speaker, I found that my right leg would shake. In my mind, my focus was “How am I doing?! How am I doing?!” (In effect, I was trying to be a perfect speaker. Trying to be perfect set me up for unnecessary nervousness.)

I learned that it’s powerful to make the shift to “How are YOU doing?”

When you focus on the audience, you can respond to them.

Excellent pitching is about being present (alive and aware) with your audience.

On September 23, 2017, Sofia University has invited me to give my workshop Authentic Marketing [both on-campus and Online]. During that workshop, I’ll have the chance to work with audience members to hone their pitches, video marketing and more.

When you attend my Sept 23, 2017 workshop in Palo Alto, California (or ONLINE) — I can work with you directly. Limited seating (Limited tickets to attend ONLINE)! Get your ticket when you CLICK HERE.

My friend, to perfect your pitch, it really helps to have a coach and a test audience. At my workshop, you’ll have me as your coach plus two colleagues (in a Team of Three) who will serve as your mini-audience. You’ll get a lot done!

Warmly,

Tom
