Use Effective Body Language in Your Pitch or Speech — Get Funding

soarwithconfidenceversion4final10-19-16web
Get Tom Marcoux ‘s book “Soar With Confidence … PItch, Lead, Succeed”

“You’re saying that the wrong body language can destroy my chance to pitch and get funding?” my client, Matthew asked.

“The wrong body language can affect the investors on the subconscious level. They won’t believe you have the confidence to be successful. That means that they’ll fund someone else’s project,” I said.

Learn Two Critical Elements of Body Language

  1. Do NOT Dismiss an Investor who seems to have “Closed Body Language”

If you step into a bookstore, you can find books on body language that proclaim that if a person has her arms crossed, she might be “closed off” to your idea.

Maybe.

She could also be cold. Or she simply finds that crossing her arms feels comfortable to her.

Here’s the point: The folded arms provide you with only one data point.

Some researchers refer to a form of “resting face” that unintentionally appears as if a person is irritated, contemptuous, angry, or simply annoyed. This expression is known as RBF — “Resting B__ch Face.”

I’ve seen some audience members (with folded arms and frowns) come up after a speech then break into a smile and tell me: “Tom, I really like the ideas you shared with us! The material is so useful.”

So be careful. Do not stop talking to people who look “closed off.” Address the whole audience because you want every chance to connect with potential investors.

  1. Make Your Body Language Congruent with What You Say

If you say, “I’m confident that my product can solve your situation,” while you’re wringing your hands, what will the investors believe—your words or your hands?

Your hands will be “too loud” and their actions will “drown out” your words.

Here’s another vital point: Do NOT take a step backwards when hit with a tough question.

Taking a step backwards makes you look scared and lacking in confidence. When I share this in workshops, a number of audience members nod their heads. That’s fine.

Then I raise the conversation up to a better place. I say: “Explanation does NOT equal transformation. … we’re now going to practice walking toward the person who asks a question.”

[In my workshops, people address a small audience of two—because the audience is divided into “Teams of Three.”]

The truth is you need to practice and rehearse effective body language.

Additionally, in my work as the Spoken Word Strategist and Executive Coach, I have my private clients practice taking one or two steps forward toward the person who asked the question. Just one or two steps forward—and not too close. The Effective Body Language says, “I’m devoting my full attention to you. I am not intimidated by your question. I am confident.”

In summary, pay close attention to the vital elements of body language.

With good, strong body language, you can be winning during a pitch even before you open your mouth. Additionally, make sure to keep the investors’ perception of you as confident by taking a couple of steps toward a person who asks you a question.

Remember, body language can drown out your words. Keep your words and body language congruent.

Warmly,
Tom

Use a Secret Advantage to Pitch Well and Get Funding

10-11-17)PowerUpYourBrand_ClientsBUP
Attend Free Oct. 25, 2017 workshop “Power Up Your Brand: Attract Clients” and learn Networking Secrets

“I want a secret advantage so I get funding when I pitch. What do you suggest, Tom?” an audience member asked me.

“Remember that you’re on before you get on stage. Even while you’re in your car, coming near the location where you’ll be pitching, you are ‘on stage,’” I said.

“How is that?”

“You’re revealing your personal brand the whole time,” I said.

Perhaps, you’ve heard about George who was running late for a job interview. He was stuck behind a slow-moving car. He beeped his horn—a lot. The driver in that car refused to go faster. Then, to George’s horror, the car pulled into the parking lot of the company where George was set to be interviewed. And…yes, the driver of that car proved to be the interviewer who did not offer George a job.

George was “doing his interview” before he even walked into the building.

A Key Advantage – Have Finesse in Meeting Investors Before You Go On Stage

What happens to investors before they hear pitches?

They get cornered by entrepreneurs looking for funding. A bunch of entrepreneurs spill out their ideas in a rush when they meet the person. In the restroom. At the door. Anywhere.

That’s not finesse.

Spilling out your ideas (and trying to impress the person) is similar to losing your lunch in front of the investor.

Here’s the Solution:

Engage the Potential Investor in a Real Conversation

Create a warm connection.

The vital action is to get the person talking and to demonstrate your trustworthiness. How? In your way of listening well.

Recently, I interacted with two entrepreneurs and a particular venture capitalist.

Both entrepreneurs had great ideas, but I felt uncomfortable about connecting them with the venture capitalist. Why? It was their people skills. One didn’t demonstrate the confidence and track record of guiding teams to completing projects. The other one was a … horrible listener. This person, in every conversation, was trying to prove how smart he was.

Both entrepreneurs would benefit from learning how to create warm connections. Also, they both need to have a personal brand that demonstrates that they are trustworthy, helpful, organized and respectful (with audiences I use the mnemonic device of T.H.O.R.).

When You First Interact with An Investor, Use “Gentle Questions”

Here are some “gentle questions”:

  • I’m [Your name] and you are …?
  • Are you looking forward to something in particular this evening?
  • I’m curious. Are you looking for something in particular when you choose to invest in a company?
  • What are you looking forward to?

I call these “gentle questions” because they’re easy to answer, and the other person often enjoys answering them.

Additionally, one does not use all of these questions in a conversation. You’ll note that there is some overlap. The point is people like those individuals who listen well. I advise my clients: “When you’re listening, you’re winning.”

Make Your Replies Relevant

You ask questions so that your replies are relevant to the person you’re talking with.

One of my favorite quotes is:

In truth, I am a verb. – Steve Chandler

Avoid trying to be “an impressive person” (a noun).

Instead, do a positive action: listen well.

Demonstrate That You’re Listening

Use what I call Reflective Replies:

  • That sounds frustrating. What happened next?
  • That sounds disappointing. What did you want to happen next?
  • That’s sounds intense. It sounds like that was tough to endure.

My point is that you’re not just responding to the content of what the other person says. You are demonstrating compassion and that you’re hearing the feelings involved. You “reflect” the person’s feelings back to them. You say, “That sounds” – in that you do not tell another person what they’re feeling.

Realize the Truth – People Invest In You

Ross Perot said that he wasn’t really investing in Steve Jobs’ company or product. He was investing Steve Jobs. Things went well for Perot—when Steve Jobs maneuvered Apple to buy his company for $400 million—Perot had a big return on his investment.

In summary, use the secret advantage: Create a warm connection before you go on stage and deliver your pitch.

Warmly,

Tom

How to Make a Great Connection During Your Pitch or Speech

Relax_sellVersion4FINAL
Tom Marcoux’s new book Relax, You Don’t Have to Sell: How You Can Make Sales Without Being Pushy

“Tell me something profound,” my wife asked me.

She had just returned from driving home in a car–for 3 hours!–with an acquaintance who spoke only of shallow things.

“I love you,” I said.

She rolled her eyes.

Not the response I was looking for.

I later asked her, “What was that about?”

She said, “I think I was expecting you to quote something from Shakespeare. I don’t know.”

You might be asking, “What does this have to do with giving a pitch or a speech?”

A lot.

In the moment when I said, “I love you,” I said the most profound thing I know. Let me give you the context. Around 17 years ago, I risked my life for my wife. As I mentioned, I love her on a profound level.

Now, let’s look at giving a pitch or speech.

Here’s another profound question that rises up: “What would I do if I were not afraid?”

My thoughtful response is: “I would connect.”

Connection is the essence of successfully giving a pitch or speech.

I’m drawing an analogy here: when I risked my life for my wife, I was vulnerable.

To make a real connection in giving a pitch, sometimes, we can use an appropriate touch of vulnerability. Some authors write about “the power of vulnerability.”

What Makes Appropriate Vulnerability?

Be careful to avoid going overboard in using self-deprecating humor.

Also, avoid placing a self-deprecating joke in the beginning of your pitch. Why? Any bit of humor could lose half the audience. So, avoid humor at the head of your pitch.

Still, a bit of appropriate vulnerability can create a real connection. For example, in one of my workshops, I include the dream I had as an 8-year-old boy: to walk on the ocean floor. I got this idea from watching the feature film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Thirty years later, I discovered I had a real dream-killing problem: Inside an MRI exam machine, for the first time, I felt slammed by claustrophobia!

My fear rose up that the diving helmet would trigger my claustrophobia.

I then used strategy to deal with my claustrophobia. I rehearsed walking on the ocean floor by wearing a hoodie (sweatshirt), pretending that the hood was the diving helmet. I practiced looking forward and ignoring the hood (like I would ignore the helmet).

This worked! Yes! I had a great time walking on the ocean floor at the Grand Cayman Island.

At this point in my workshop, I connect my dream and my using strategy to fulfill that dream with the workshop attendees’ entrepreneurial dreams.

Trying to Look “Perfect” Can Be the Enemy of Connection

Years ago, as a novice speaker, I found that my right leg would shake. In my mind, my focus was “How am I doing?! How am I doing?!” (In effect, I was trying to be a perfect speaker. Trying to be perfect set me up for unnecessary nervousness.)

I learned that it’s powerful to make the shift to “How are YOU doing?”

When you focus on the audience, you can respond to them.

Excellent pitching is about being present (alive and aware) with your audience.

On September 23, 2017, Sofia University has invited me to give my workshop Authentic Marketing [both on-campus and Online]. During that workshop, I’ll have the chance to work with audience members to hone their pitches, video marketing and more.

When you attend my Sept 23, 2017 workshop in Palo Alto, California (or ONLINE) — I can work with you directly. Limited seating (Limited tickets to attend ONLINE)! Get your ticket when you CLICK HERE.

My friend, to perfect your pitch, it really helps to have a coach and a test audience. At my workshop, you’ll have me as your coach plus two colleagues (in a Team of Three) who will serve as your mini-audience. You’ll get a lot done!

Warmly,

Tom

How You Can Breakthrough and Perform at Your BEST with a Speech or Pitch

PitchConfidenceWorkshopAD(7-15-17B
Learn and Practice Methods to Give Your Best Pitch when you CLICK HERE to Register for FREE EVENT

“When will I finally know that I’m doing well in giving a pitch?” my client, Andrea, asked me.

“That’s an experience that relates to what’s real in you, what’s real in the material and a Real Connection with your audience,” I said.

We’ll use the C.A.N. process:

C – call out what’s real in you
A – act in Effective Rehearsals
N – nurture connection

  1. Call out what’s real in you

As the Spoken Word Strategist and a Pitch Coach, I help my clients connect with the words that sound real and confident coming out of the person’s mouth.

My background as a trained feature film director, actor and screenwriter helps me hear the real moments in a performance. It’s a unique, personal blend in the client’s words and performance that do NOT feel forced or like “acting.”

Let’s look at this distinction:

The Excellent Approach: Act It Until You Become It
Versus
The Garbage Approach: Fake It Until You Make It

When I help a client refine his or her pitch, I listen carefully to the client’s rough draft ideas, words and performance.

When a moment in the pitch works, I say, “Yes! Did you hear that? Keep that!”

Other times, I’ll guide the client to try other approaches.

By the way, as the client expresses his or her best moments, the person is taking action (“acting”).

The best pitch a client can make is like hidden treasure. My client and I go on a prospecting hunt. We come up with gems.

I call this Act It Until You Become It, because we’re having the client express the self and the material with compelling truthful moments. This has nothing to do with faking anything.

  1. Act in Effective Rehearsals

We continue with our conversation about Act It Until You Become It.

My training with mentors in acting helped me realize that many great moments in film acting arise out of something that is true and real. Remember, a professional actor focuses on Acting not lukewarm “pretending” or “fake it until you make it.”

The actor finds something true in the character, the moment and the writing.

As a feature film director, my job is to guide the actor to that moment.

My clients (and attendees of my workshop “Pitch With Extreme Confidence” – August 16, 2017. CLICK HERE to register for FREE EVENT) learn to rehearse extraordinary methods to handle the fearful moments of giving a speech. What do you do if your mind goes blank? What do you do when an investor gives you a disruptive, tough question? It is through the Effective Rehearsal of techniques that we develop a higher level of confidence in ourselves. I guide the workshop attendees to use methods that create Extreme Confidence.

Extreme Confidence is when you KNOW that you know how to adapt to anything.

Here is an important distinction:

Ordinary Rehearsal: Rehearsing to the mirror or to family members who are jaded about the material.

Versus

Effective Rehearsals: Work with a coach. Work with test audiences. Practice appropriate things each day for a brief time (it can be as little as 9 minutes a day).

I’ve made vital pitches/speeches that have literally changed my life. And my clients and audiences have reaped the benefits: Learning my techniques that create a Real Connection with any audience.

  1. Nurture connection

How do audience members connect with YOU and your material? Through emotion—then logic.

Connect with them from the start.

Someone who says, “Hi. I’m Joe Smitghy. I’m with XY Company and we make 1-2-3 Widgets” creates three bad things:

  • The person has wasted the opening fifteen seconds of the pitch
  • The person looks like an amateur
  • The audience fidgets because they’re dreading having to become embarrassed for a poor presenter

Instead, you can start with a story, a question, or “Imagine …”

Go for connection from the first moment of your pitch.

In my speech “The Savvy CEO: Master of Media Appearances,” I note that just a touch of appropriate vulnerability can win an audience to your side, too.

Connection is key!

In summary, we have covered material about:

  • What’s Real in you
  • What’s Real in the material
  • A Real Connection with the audience

This is accomplished with:

C – call out what’s real in you
A – act in Effective Rehearsals
N – nurture connection

Warmly,
Tom
