Learn Secrets to Give a Great Pitch – while Being an Introvert

IntoFormulaGetClients8“You don’t understand: It’s hard for me to make a pitch because I’m an introvert,” I overheard one person say to another before I served as a Pitch Judge recently. Introvert does not mean shy. Shy is a set of behaviors. When I was younger, I did a certain set of behaviors that caused me to think of myself as shy. Then I gained mentors and moved beyond that.

You CAN make a great pitch if you’re dealing with being an introvert. By the way, an introvert has specific advantages.  This is so important to me that I created an online course, The Introvert’s Formula to Get Clients (begins June 11, 2018) – to help introverts use their specific advantages. I also help introverts avoid trying to be a “fake extrovert.”  Being an introvert is about how you’re wired and how you pay out energy when you’re in a group. You need to become strategic about this whole process. It helps to realize the #1 Secret to Get Clients, and this secret also applies to getting investors and to being at your best while you’re pitching (whether on stage or in a meeting). In the following video (8 min.), you’ll learn the 3 Biggest Mistakes to avoid whether you’re pitching or trying to get a client.

From the standpoint of a pitch: if someone asked you a really tough question, you can use the same principle that I share in this 4.2 minute video about how to avoid creating more resistance.

Instead, during this video you learn how to guide a person (like an Aikido master) by using effective language.

In summary: being an introvert is a matter of energy. To do your best when you give a pitch, you need to focus on three things: Words, Strategy and Rehearsal.

Words – Strategy – Rehearsal form the center of my work with clients and audiences about pitching and giving great speeches that move people to cooperate—for example, investors to give you funding.

One special detail that I bring to your attention now: Use the concept of Better Than Zero. As I help introverts become better speakers and give better pitches, I coach them in a special way to rehearse. They learn to use only three to five minutes in the morning and only three to five minutes in the evening as part of creating a real transformation.  You can create such a transformation in you so that you can pitch and come across as confident even if, as an introvert, you might feel truly uncomfortable on the inside.

How You Can Fix a Verbal Tic and Pitch Powerfully

“Ugh! I can’t stand to hear that person speak!” my friend, Sarah, said.

“What’s the difficulty?” I asked.

“Just about every other word, he says, ‘Um.’ It’s painful to hear,” she said.

I’ve worked with hundreds of clients and MBA students.

Many people have some sort of verbal tic.

As a professional speaker (member of the National Speakers Association for over 18 years), I even avoid saying “um”—instead I say, “The u-m sound.”

I recently worked with someone who had a verbal tic of saying “so” and “and so.”

Here’s the process. Use these methods …

  • Alert
  • Replace
  • Rehearse
  1. Alert

Have a friend tap a glass, every time, during rehearsal, that you make the verbal tic sound. Now, you’re alerted to the problem.

  1. Replace

For many verbal tics, the useful replacement is to take a breath. Some people say “Um” or “Uh” as a reflex while they’re thinking of what they’ll say next. Instead, take a breath and pause in your speaking. Your audience often uses the pause to catch up in their thoughts about what you’ve said previously.

  1. Rehearse

When you feel an urge to say “um” (or some other verbal tic), take a breath.

Here are specific replacements for the verbal tic of “and so”: 

* The next step is…
* The reason is…
* Here’s something connected to that… 
* I’ll add to that with …

Rehearsal is necessary, so you can become natural in your better ways of expressing yourself. The process is Act it until you become it.

Use Effective Body Language in Your Pitch or Speech — Get Funding

“You’re saying that the wrong body language can destroy my chance to pitch and get funding?” my client, Matthew asked.

“The wrong body language can affect the investors on the subconscious level. They won’t believe you have the confidence to be successful. That means that they’ll fund someone else’s project,” I said.

Learn Two Critical Elements of Body Language

  1. Do NOT Dismiss an Investor who seems to have “Closed Body Language”

If you step into a bookstore, you can find books on body language that proclaim that if a person has her arms crossed, she might be “closed off” to your idea.

Maybe.

She could also be cold. Or she simply finds that crossing her arms feels comfortable to her.

Here’s the point: The folded arms provide you with only one data point.

Some researchers refer to a form of “resting face” that unintentionally appears as if a person is irritated, contemptuous, angry, or simply annoyed. This expression is known as RBF — “Resting B__ch Face.”

I’ve seen some audience members (with folded arms and frowns) come up after a speech then break into a smile and tell me: “Tom, I really like the ideas you shared with us! The material is so useful.”

So be careful. Do not stop talking to people who look “closed off.” Address the whole audience because you want every chance to connect with potential investors.

  1. Make Your Body Language Congruent with What You Say

If you say, “I’m confident that my product can solve your situation,” while you’re wringing your hands, what will the investors believe—your words or your hands?

Your hands will be “too loud” and their actions will “drown out” your words.

Here’s another vital point: Do NOT take a step backwards when hit with a tough question.

Taking a step backwards makes you look scared and lacking in confidence. When I share this in workshops, a number of audience members nod their heads. That’s fine.

Then I raise the conversation up to a better place. I say: “Explanation does NOT equal transformation. … we’re now going to practice walking toward the person who asks a question.”

[In my workshops, people address a small audience of two—because the audience is divided into “Teams of Three.”]

 The truth is you need to practice and rehearse effective body language.

Additionally, in my work as the Spoken Word Strategist and Executive Coach, I have my private clients practice taking one or two steps forward toward the person who asked the question. Just one or two steps forward—and not too close. The Effective Body Language says, “I’m devoting my full attention to you. I am not intimidated by your question. I am confident.”

In summary, pay close attention to the vital elements of body language.

With good, strong body language, you can be winning during a pitch even before you open your mouth. Additionally, make sure to keep the investors’ perception of you as confident by taking a couple of steps toward a person who asks you a question.

Remember, body language can drown out your words. Keep your words and body language congruent.

The Secret to Drop Nervousness and Pitch Powerfully

pitchwithconfidenceonesheet2On stage, I shook so badly that my right leg fluttered like a hummingbird’s wings. I was stuck. Where? I was stuck in “How am I doing?! How am I doing?!”

When I coach a client to give a great pitch to gain funding, I help the person shift out of such a dis-empowered state. I’ve been a professional speaker over 16 years, and I know what it takes to shift to the power to perform well.

“We’ll have you shift out of ‘how am I doing?’ into ‘how are YOU doing?’” I say to my client.

This means that you prepare so well that you’re connected to the investors.
So, leave self-consciousness behind.

Think of it: What does the investor want? To avoid making a mistake. What’s the big mistake?—picking someone you can’t trust to do what it takes to succeed.
Making a business work requires the flexibility to pivot fast and the power to stay strong and to persist.

Investors test us when we’re giving a pitch before them.
Can you take a tough question and keep your poise?
Have you rehearsed more than just the text?

While I work with a client, I say, “Your mind just went blank! Use a Recovery Method.”

Recently, I saw Auli’i Cravalho perform “How Far I’ll Go” (song from Disney’s MOANA, animated feature film)—during the Oscars. Several performers behind her, swung huge flags. I thought, “Careful, don’t hit—” THUD—one performer hit Auli’i in the head with a flag.
Did Auli’i miss a beat?
No. She kept singing, beautifully. She’s a well-trained, thoroughly prepared professional. What a performer!

That’s what I want for you. Be that exceptional pitch-deliverer. It’s not just practicing the text of your speech. You need to make a real connection.
Auli’i maintained her connection with her audience and with her song.

What does your investor want? Remember, the idea is to connect with “How are YOU doing?”
The investor wants to know:

  • It’s safe to trust you.
  • You are flexible.
  • You care about your product, the people you’ll serve, and the investors who will take the journey with you.
  • You are confident in yourself.

My phrase is: “Confidence is Contagious; Compassion Is the Path.”

The idea is that when you shift from the self-consciousness of “How am I doing?” to “How are YOU doing?” — you’re going to a place of compassion. This ties in with my description of the Sequence: “Confidence is contagious. Investors pick it up. You build trust. Trust gets funding.”

Shift your thinking from “How am I doing?” to “how are YOU doing?”
Have that conversation with your audience of investors.
Look people in the eye.
Remember, it looks a like a group, but you’re really there with the opportunity to connect with individuals.

Someone asks you a tough question, and you’ll reply: “I’m glad you brought that up. Your name is? George? George, it looks like that’s important to you. Related to that, I want to emphasize …”

As you can see, we’re talking about connecting. When you pay attention to individual investors, you shift out of self-consciousness. You create a conversation.
They can feel your trustworthiness.
Often, as I work with clients, I help them express a personal brand of T.H.O.R.: trustworthy, helpful, organized and respectful.

The Powerful Move is to establish yourself as a peer.
Investors do not fund the work of supplicants.
You and your project are “the prize.”
Learn to connect and get your funding.
