Use the Most Important Secret for Your Great Pitch

“The pressure is intense. I must give the best pitch of my life,” my new client, Amelia, said.

Before I replied, I realized one crucial thing: Amelia needed a structure so that she would ensure her improvements in elements of making a compelling pitch.

During our resulting conversation, I shared with her: “Here’s something vital: You need to lead yourself in certain prime areas.” (I sometimes refer to this as the most important secret for giving a great pitch.)

I invite you to focus on leading yourself to:

  • Rehearse
  • Get coaching
  • Test the material
  1. Rehearse

In many cases, a 9-minute rehearsal early in the day will help you improve rapidly. Why? Your subconscious mind will work on the material all day long. Also, take advantage of 2-minute rehearsals. Try bits of humor or compelling examples as you have conversations with friends or colleagues during the day.

You can ask a friend: “Are you okay with my rehearsing the open 2 minutes of my pitch?”

Often, you’ll hear: “Sure.”

  1. Get coaching

No Olympic athlete works without a coach. I can relate to this in that I’m the Executive Coach to a sports psychologist who has supported over 100 Olympians.

When I speak of “lead yourself”, I mean that you look for the coaching you need, you show up for the sessions, and you do the rehearsals between sessions.

I have a team of people who coach me. They can see what I don’t see. They’re on my side and they challenge me to rise to higher levels of fulling my potential.

Be sure to gather a circle of supporters for you own professional growth.

  1. Test the material

Here I’ll talk about two dimensions of testing your material.

Level One of Testing is getting input from people you trust. Work with your Pitch Coach. Also, try your material on people who share characteristics of your likely audience for your pitch or speech.

In my new book Shape the Future, Lead Like a Pro, I show you how to get valuable input from team members. It’s vital that you listen to the input in a way that encourages people to alert you to the “whole picture.” In my book, I share these facets: “What Works” and “Areas to Improve.”

Start with “What Works” – that puts you and the reviewer in a good space. Then ask for “Areas to Improve.” Assure the person that they can be candid. Sometimes, I say, “I’ve hired over nine editors, so I welcome the tough news. It helps me improve.”

Level Two of Testing is to notice what feels right flowing from your own mouth. This relates to the art and science of public speaking.

As you rehearse and test material, you’ll discover what phrases work for you naturally. This helps you communicate in ways that inspire the audience to deem you as genuine and trustworthy.

In summary, focus on these areas:

  • Rehearse
  • Get coaching
  • Test the material

Be sure to lead yourself to get the guidance/coaching you need. Additionally, put in the required rehearsal to bring your pitch or speech to a high level of professionalism.

Leading yourself to prepare helps you communicate so powerfully that you gain the funding you need.

Warmly,
Tom

Secrets so You Connect with Your Pitch or Speech

Microphone
Learn about “Extreme Confidence” – Free Webinar – Feb. 28, 2018, hosted by Tom Marcoux

“I’m concerned that I’m not connecting with the audience. I’m sharp about tech details, but this speaking stuff is outside my comfort zone,” Henry, a member of my audience, said. He was asking for more guidance after one of my speeches.

I shared with him some details, taken from my speech The Savvy CEO: Master of Media Appearances.

Here we’ll cover a brief overview as embodied in the S.A.V.V.Y. process:

S – story
A – attention
V – vulnerability
V – victory
Y – yearning

  1. Story

Through the use of storytelling, we truly connect with audience members.

In my book, Relax, You Don’t Have to Sell, I shared the S.T.O.R.Y. process which includes:

S – set how we like the hero
T – target the hero’s goal
O – open with a grabber
R – reveal the struggle
Y – yearn for the Triumphant Ending and “What I learned…”

To get the full benefit from storytelling, it’s necessary to carefully structure your story. Ultimately, we’re seeking to grab the audience’s attention and to move their feelings.

  1. Attention

A key to quieting down your nervousness is to pay attention to your audience members. What material is connecting with them? What is their body language conveying?

When I first began speaking, my right leg fluttered like a hummingbird’s wings. I overcame this situation by shifting from “How am I doing?” to a new focus on the audience—“How are YOU doing?”

The idea is shift from self-consciousness to audience awareness.

******BREAKING NEWS! FEB. 28, 2018 — FREE WEBINAR — LEARN ABOUT “EXTREME CONFIDENCE” AND EFFECTIVE PERSUASION … and more. ******

  1. Vulnerability

“Vulnerable?” my new client, Sam, asked. “I don’t get that. The company, the board of directors requires me to be strong and clear in my objectives.”

“When dealing with the media or in an all-hands speech, it helps to show you are a human being and not just a stuffed shirt,” I replied.

“How do I do that?”

“We pick something that is an Appropriate Vulnerability.” I went on to share how, in his later years, Dr. Wayne Dyer warmed up the audience by talking about how his teenaged daughter would lightly poke at him by putting her hands on her hips and begin with: “Daaad, you know that …”

Being vulnerable in an appropriate manner wins you the connection with the audience.

  1. Victory

Audiences love a well-earned victory. Somewhere in your presentation, show the goal, the setbacks and the real struggle. Then, when you express the Triumphant Outcome, the audience celebrates with you. You take them on the journey so the victory feels like their victory, too.

  1. Yearning

Make a real connection with an audience by connecting with their Secret Desires—what they’re yearning for.

For example, I was working with a client. She serves women in the second half of their lives. One Secret Desire is to avoid feeling alone. So for the description of an event, I added the detail that she “finds that women often start new, lifelong friendships at her retreats and events.”

I chose the term Secret Desires with care because many people often hold these details close to the vest.

Here is a partial list of Secret Desires:

  1. Not to be alone
  2. Not to appear stupid (analytical individuals including engineers and accountants demonstrate this desire)
  3. Not to be vulnerable
  4. Not to be obsolete
  5. Not to fall into financial ruin

We can note Secrets Desires in a positive way: smart, attractive, successful and rich (for example).

Researchers note people’s deep desire to be appreciated and recognized.

Somewhere in your speech, you can include words like: “By your applause about that detail, I realize that you have your fingers on the pulse. You’re really sharp to notice that …”

Pay close attention to your rapport with audience. A bit of praise goes a long way for warming up your connection with your audience.

In summary, to connect with your audience effectively, remember to be S.A.V.V.Y.:

S – story
A – attention
V – vulnerability
V – victory
Y – yearning

Hidden Secret So You Pitch Well – or Give a Great Speech

DarkestSecretsPersuasionfrontcover
Guard Your Personal Energy. Make this a Great Year 2018 – Get Tom Marcoux’s book, Darkest Secrets of Persuasion and Seduction Masters.

“What makes the difference between a pitch that lands and one that bounces off the audience?” my friend Stephen asked.

“Energy,” I replied.

“Are you talking about coming across as enthusiastic?” he asked.

Personal energy is not just about putting on the big smile and speaking with vigor and passion. Some people try faking a smile, and it comes across as phony.

I dislike that old cliché “fake it until you make it.”

A lot of people feel, subconsciously, that something is off when someone puts on a “fake enthusiasm” mask for their pitch or speech.

Instead, I focus on Act It Until You Become It. That arises from my training as both actor and feature film director. To act it requires a good form of energy. You feel confident of your material, your efforts in rehearsals and the coaching you’ve received.

Still, there is an additional level to having effective personal energy: You need to guard your energy.

From what? From manipulation striking you in your regular life.

In my 40’s, I was in a particular auditorium watching as my friends were being manipulated by certain tactics, a speaker was using. I got angry. Soon after, in a university professors’ lounge, I sat down with my laptop and wrote 2,000 words—in a sprint. (My rapid writing flowed out just before I gave a scheduled graduate level class in San Francisco.)

Those 2,000 words were the first of what became a book, Darkest Secrets of Persuasion and Seduction Master: How to Protect Yourself and Turn the Power to Good. [Click Here to ‘Look Inside’ this book.]

I’ll put this in a few words:

If you don’t protect yourself from manipulation in your regular life, you won’t have the reserves to be at your best when you’re on stage pitching.

Why? Because on some level, you’ll be drained and distracted.

Your pitch or speech is too important for you to leave to chance or the storms of life—including manipulation that arises from various sides.

Here I’ll provide some useful tips as the W.I.N. process:

1. Work on your weak points

Where are you weak? Do you get easy to manipulated if someone says, ‘Don’t miss out! The price goes up at 12 midnight’? Be sure to have people you trust who you can turn to—to protect you from making a bad decision.

2. Identify your countermeasures

Have a plan. Rehearse how you will counter extreme demands on your time or attention. Work with a coach or therapist—or both. (They provide different forms of support. I have clients who also have a therapist. I’m the Spoken Word Strategist and Executive Coach. Therapy is not my domain.)

3. Nurture your strength

Do you exercise every day? Imagine if you did. You’d feel stronger. We need strength in both body and mind. Study methods that will have you prepared.

A friend recently asked me, “Tom, why did you read 82 books last year?”

“My clients and my team rely on me to have a nimble mind filled with valuable, strategic methods,” I replied. “I keep up with research about how people actually operate. That’s how I can be a valued thinking partner and Executive Coach to my clients.”

In summary, get clear that you need to guard your personal energy against assailants trying to use manipulation in your regular life. Why? You need reserves of personal energy to act at your best in rehearsals and on stage for your pitch or speech.

Remember:

W – work on your weak points
I – identify your countermeasures
N – nurture your strength

Warmly,
Tom

Use the Advantage of Intuition for a Speech or Pitch

coverdsecrets_pitch_marcoux
Tom Marcoux’s book, “Darkest Secrets of Making a Pitch for Film and Television

“How am I going to know if my pitch is working?” my workshop member, Adam, asked.

“It’s a combination of coaching, test audiences, and your intuition,” I replied.

“Intuition?”

Several successful leaders point out that they use “gut feelings.” Author and researcher Gerd Gigerenzer identifies intuition as connected with data that has not risen to the conscious level. He notes situations in which a person had a “bad feeling” but could not give a persuasive, rational argument. Then the company went ahead into what became a business disaster, and the person’s “bad feeling” proved an accurate assessment.

In my speech about the “RoiLeader,” I talk about how to use intuition effectively. ROI refers to “Return on Investment.” Your best investments are in your own skills and in the person you’re in conversation with.

In my “RoiLeader” speech, I breakdown R.O.I. in this way:

R – relate
O – optimize
I – intuit

Here, I’ll focus on intuit.

We explore how to M.O.V.E. on your intuition:

To gain the advantage of using your intuition for your best performance in a speech or pitch, you need move—that is, take action.

  1. Make space for your intuition

What do you use as the opening of your pitch? You can make space for your intuition by saying, “I’ll just see how it feels over the next couple of days.” This is an “open” approach as opposed to shutting down your process quickly.

Unfortunately, many individuals have not practiced being okay for a duration of uncertainty. Top innovators know that you need to tinker with a problem for a time—to come up with an excellent solution

Be sure to try your opening line of your pitch with a number of people. Notice how you feel as you say the line. Give it time (and space) for you to discover what works well.

  1. Observe closely and “listen” to your intuition

At one point, I was preparing a speech, and I invited 11 people to hear various versions of the speech. They all had varying opinions.

Over the years, I’ve realized that one does not have to take in or use every different opinion.

It’s not just what other people say, it is what YOU feel as you do the speech or pitch.

As you practice saying your ideas out loud, you get experiences, so you can sense what feels like a true fit for you.

  1. Validate your intuition

Keep a log of times your intuition was correct, and you improved your life by acting based on your intuitive impression. When you have a written log, you have evidence that your intuition serves you well.

  1. Energize through rehearsal

Top actor Kenneth Branagh said, “I used to call it fear [stage fright] but now I call it excitement because it is more useful.”

As the Spoken Word Strategist and Executive Coach, I guide clients to devote even just 9 minutes a day to rehearsal (preferably early in the day) so they can get their subconscious mind involved in their process. When you work for 9 minutes in the morning, your subconscious mind works on your speech at various times during your whole day.

In summary, make space for your intuition to help you.

When your intuition is well-developed, you can even modify details spontaneously–during your pitchto connect well with your current audience of investors.

Remember:

M – Make space for your intuition
O – Observe closely and “listen” to your intuition
V – Validate your intuition
E – Energize through rehearsal

Warmly,
Tom
